Steady sound beats silence
There is a road outside that goes quiet around two and picks up again before five. Or a neighbour whose television comes through the wall in bursts. Or a flat where the heating clanks once, unpredictably, every twenty minutes or so.
Every guide says the same thing: keep the bedroom quiet. So you have been trying to subtract sound, one source at a time, and it has not gone well, because most of these sources are not yours to switch off.
The advice is aiming at the wrong quantity.
Your hearing has no lid
Every other sense can be closed. You can shut your eyes, leave the room, put down whatever you were holding. Hearing has no equivalent, and it does not switch off when you fall asleep — it keeps running, at reduced sensitivity, monitoring.
What it is monitoring for is the useful part. It is not measuring absolute loudness and comparing it to a threshold. It is watching for change. A sound that has been continuously present for an hour has stopped carrying information; a sound that starts, stops, or changes character is new information, and new information is what pulls you towards the surface.
That single distinction reorganises everything.
A quiet room is not a stable room, and stability is what you want. In a genuinely silent bedroom, every event — the clank, the car, the door downstairs — arrives against nothing. It has the whole dynamic range to itself. In a room with a steady sound already in it, the same event is a smaller proportional change, and a smaller change is a weaker signal.
Which means the goal is not less sound. The goal is less contrast.
Masking is not about the sound being pleasant
This is where the standard explanation goes soft. Masking gets described as soothing, or calming, as if the hum were doing something to your nervous system. It isn’t. It raises the floor.
Picture the noise you cannot control as a spike. You have two options: lower the spike, which usually means negotiating with a neighbour or moving house, or raise everything around it so the spike is no longer a spike. The second one is entirely within your control and requires nothing you do not already own.
A fan running at its lowest setting does it. So does an extractor, a radio held between stations, an air purifier you bought for something else, a window open onto steady traffic rather than closed against intermittent traffic. The requirement is only that it be continuous and boring. A sound that varies is a second source of events, not a mask.
And the honest hardest-version answer is earplugs. They are cheap, they are the only thing that works on a genuinely loud environment, and there is no cleverer solution hiding behind them. The reason to reach for masking first is not that it is superior; it is that earplugs are uncomfortable for a lot of people and a fan is not.
Some sounds get through anything
Worth naming, because it is the limit of the whole approach: not all sound is treated equally by a sleeping brain. Certain things are prioritised regardless of how loud they are — your own name, a child making an unusual noise, a sound that has previously meant something urgent. This is not a flaw you can tune out, and if you are the person who has to hear the child, you should not want to.
So masking works well on traffic, plumbing, weather, other people’s music and other people’s stairs. It works much less well on anything your attention has already been trained to treat as important. Those are not noise problems; they are on-call problems, and no arrangement of a room resolves them.

The awkward case: the other person in the bed
Two people, one room, and one of them makes the noise. This is the version with no purely environmental answer, and it is worth separating into two very different situations.
If it is ordinary breathing noise, light snoring on some nights, or the sound of someone shifting position — that is a masking problem like any other, with the added complication that you cannot put the source in another room without a conversation about it. Masking is the move, plus the boring observation that a sound is far more irritating when you are lying there waiting for it than when something else is occupying the floor.
If it is heavy, persistent snoring, or if you have watched them stop breathing and then start again with a gasp — that is not a noise problem and no arrangement of fans and earplugs is the appropriate response. It is worth them raising with a doctor. Naming it here as a bedroom-acoustics issue would be the wrong category, and the wrong category is how people spend years on the wrong fix.
The other genuinely hard one is a household where the noise is other people being awake. Masking helps. Aligning the wake time with the people you live with helps more, when it is available at all.
What this changes and what it doesn’t
Sound is a smaller lever than light and a smaller one than temperature, and it is worth saying so. Its particular value is in the second half of the night, when sleep is lighter and an interruption is more likely to become a full waking — which is exactly where the difference between an interruption and a night you actually stay in tends to be decided.
What it does not do is make you sleepy, move your body clock, or address anything you brought to bed with you. A perfectly masked room is a room with one fewer source of interruptions in it. That is all it is, and on some nights that is enough to matter.
